The Voice : La Plus Belle Voix (meaning ‘The most beautiful voice’ in English) is a French reality singing contest on TF1. It’s France’s adaptation of the The Voice format devised by John de Mol. The premiere was held on 25 February 2012. It marks the second instance in which the format is presented in French after the production of the version of The Voice Belgique from Belgium.

Among the show’s key elements are the qualities of the singing talents. Four coaches, all well-known performing artists, coach the talents’ skills and periodically sing with them. The contestants are selected based on a “blind audition” process where the coaches can hear but not see the contestant.

The original panel had Florent Pagny, Jenifer, Louis Bertignac, and Garou. The new panel for the next fourteenth season will consist of Pagny, Zaz, Vianney, and Patricia Kaas. More coaches have appeared throughout previous seasons, like Mika, Zazie, Pascal Obispo, Matt Pokora, Julien Clerc, Soprano, Amel Bent, Marc Lavoine, Lara Fabian, and Bigflo & Oli. Nolwenn Leroy appeared as a coach on the Comeback Stage in the eleventh season. Camille Lellouche was the comeback stagecoach for the thirteenth season. Voice Kids coach Patrick Fiori coached in The Stars format of the show.

Series Overview

  • The series is divided into 3 phases: a blind test, a battle phase, and live performance shows. 4 judges/coaches, all noteworthy soundtrack artists, choose teams of contestants through a blind audition procedure. Once the auditions have been held in all regions, each judge has the length of the audition’s act, about one minute, to decide if they want that singer on their team; if two or more judges want the same singer-as happens, typically, the singer has the final choice of coach. An additional twist is brought to the show: the block. Besides the large red button, each coach also has three other buttons.
  • These buttons also have the names of different coaches. If a coach wants an artist but does not want a rival coach to acquire that artist, they can hit the switch with the name of the coach that they would like to block. It will automatically block that other coach and rotate the chair to the next place. If the blocked coach wants to turn around, all his chair lighting remains red, the “JE VOUS VEUX” text under the chair will not appear, and the LED-screen toward him will say “BLOQUE” instead, not the coach’s name. In season 12, they can block another coach at any time, even during their pitch. When a coach is blocked, their chair turns back.
  • Each team of singers are train and groom by their coach. During the battle round, called stage two, each coach pits two of their team members in a head-to-head battle in which they perform the same song together, but the coach chooses which team member to send into the first live round from each of the four separate “battles”.
  • In that 1st live round, the surviving acts from each team again contest head-to-head, with a mixture of public and jury votes deciding who advances to the next round. The final phase calls for the remaining contestants in the top 8 who only compete against each other in live broadcasts. The television audience and the coaches have an equal say 50/50 in determining who moves on to the final 4 phases. With 1-team member remaining for each coach, the last four contestants compete against each other in the finale, where the outcome is decide purely by public vote.
